College members including President and student council performed morning cleaning and met freshmen on the first day of a new semester. Foreign students of Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (PSPS) also participated in campus purification activities. “Fresh environment is the start of healthy campus life … participation of many students is required.” [March 02, 2022] At 7:30 a.m. On March 2, college members including President and student council gathered early in the morning of the first day of a new semester. They made campus cleaning activities to greet students coming to the campus with 2022 freshmen after a long time. In the service activities managed by YU student council, more than 100 college members including major professors such as CHOI Oe-chool (Professor) and SEO Bo-geon (Dean of Students) and representative students of student council, club association, Central Audit Committee, and college student councils, etc. participated. KANG Tae-wook (Chairman of YU Student Council, 4th grade of Department of New Materials) said, “I planned this campus purification activity to cheer freshmen who come to the university campus for the first time the students who come to the university after a long time since COVID-19 event. I think it is the start of healthy campus life to make our living surroundings to fresh environment. I thank President, college staff, and foreign students for their active participation.” Especially, more than 30 foreign students of YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (PSPS) participated in the activity and executives/employees of Daegu Bank YU Branch also participated.” More than 100 YU members were divided into two groups and made campus purification activity starting at Cheonmajimun, the gate of YU. They made purification activity for one hour in International Exchange Center, Student Hall, surroundings of integrated lecture building, and Cheonma Art Center frequently visited by students. President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “I am proud of the students who are voluntarily making the valuable our living campus to clean spaces. It is more meaningful because the door of new 2022 semester is opened with students’ campus purification activity. This is the 75th anniversary of YU. YU intends to make a new start to cultivate talents to contribute to human society starting this year. Leading example for happiness and safety of others starts with minor practice such as campus cleaning service. The college will provide every support so that they may become talents to achieve large dreams starting at minor practice and actions.”

High-ranking persons of Cambodian parliament and governments visited YU and had discussions on the measures for cooperation in Saemaul international development. Discussions on exchange expansion for cooperation in international development such as joint degree courses among colleges “We will play the roles of colleges to make the foundation for joint prosperity of global village.” [February 15, 2022] <High-ranking persons of Cambodian parliament and governments visited YU and had discussions on the measures for cooperation in Saemaul international development.> High-ranking persons of Cambodian parliament and governments visited YU (President CHOI Oe-chool).It is intended to have discussions on the measures for cooperation in Saemaul international development with YU that has the expert with construction of an academic system in Saemaul development area and to strengthen exchange relation between Cambodia and YU. In the afternoon on the 15th, 12 persons of main governmental ministries and offices including Suos Yara (Cambodian Parliament Member, Chairman of Foreign Affairs of Parliament) and Cheunboran Chanborey (Adviser of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) visited YU again. Parliament Member Suos Yara takes in charge of Chairman of Foreign Affairs of Parliament and is evaluated as a next-generation leader of Cambodia. Especially, Parliament Member Suos Yara is known to be a close associate of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and to have strong influences in Cambodia. On that day, Parliament Member Suos Yara met CHOI Oe-chool (President of YU) and said, “It’s an honor for me to visit YU that concluded MOU with a local college of Cambodia and is leading educational Korean wave in Cambodia through activation of Saemaul international development education and establishment of Korean Studies Research Center. I hope expansion of exchange to various areas to help national development over the exchange relation in educational area which has been connected until now. I want YU to play a role to expand practical relations between both countries.” <From the left, Cambodian Parliament Member Suos Yara and YU President CHOI Oe-chool> As a reply, President CHOI Oe-chool commented, “We will support in full for operation of joint degree courses with Cambodial local colleges and more active exchange and cooperation. Furthermore, we will play a role to improve friendly relationship and to expand exchange and cooperation area between both countries. This year is a meaningful year, 75th Anniversary of YU. YU intends to take a new leap to cultivate talents for contributions in human society. We will play the role of a university to make a foundation for joint prosperity of global village.” President CHOI Oe-chool was commissioned as an advisor of Cambodian Prime Minister since 2014 and takes in charge of governmental policy advisor on various projects implemented in Cambodian farm development area.As main persons of Cambodian governments and parliament visited YU and had direct discussions with President CHOI, it is expected that practical exchange will be rapidly expanded at the levels of governments and parliament as well as Cambodian local colleges. Meanwhile, it is the second time that Cambodian governmental high-ranking team visited YU. In 2014, deputy minister level persons of Cambodian main governmental ministries and offices including Ministry of Agricultural Development, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Public Projects and Transportation, etc. as well as Yim Chhayly (Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Agriculture and Agricultural Village Development Committee) visited YU and asked advises on transfer of Saemaul Undong and establishment and operation of Saemaul College in Cambodia. Since that time, YU is having active discussions on establishment of Department of Saemaul Economical Development and implementation of plural degree system, student exchange program, and international joint researches with Royal Phnom Penh University and Western University of Cambodia.

His term is two years from February 16. Chairman YOON Dong-han of General Alumni Association said, “I feel heavy responsibility for the position to represent the proud 270,000 alumni who make activities in every places of the world over Korea. I will do my best to enhance the prestige accumulated YU alumni until now and to develop alma mater and alumni association. Executives of General Alumni Association as well as me will take the initiative. We hope continuous interest of 270,000 alumni.” Chairman YOON Dong-han of General Alumni Association participated in the regular general meeting and said, “I thank Chairman YOON Dong-han for leading development of General Alumni Association in terms of both material and morale support for development of alma mater. This year is a meaningful year, 75th Anniversary of YU. We intend to take a new leap to cultivate talents for contributions in human society. I want 270,000 alumni and Chairman YOON Dong-han of General Alumni Association to cheer with all their might. Alma mater will also make support for union and development of the alumni association.” Chairman YOON Dong-han of General Alumni Association has Student ID 66 of Department of Business Administration of YU, served as a vice-president of Daewoong Co., Ltd, established Kolmar Korea in 1990, and leads it until now. His excellent capability for management was proved through Korean 100 CEOs in 2019 (Maekyung ECONOMY), EY Best Businessman Prize Master Prize (EI Global) in 2018, 2018 Korean Manager Award (KMAC), 2015 100 Excellent Employment Generation Enterprises (Ministry of Employment and Labor), 2014 Order of Civil Merit, Camellia Medal, This Year’s CEO Grand Prize in 2010 (Korea Economic Daily), 2005 Scientific/Technical Medal of Merit (Innovation Award), etc. He was selected as YU 69th Anniversary Proud YU Person in May 2016 with acceptance of such contributions. Meanwhile, Chairman JEONG Tae-il of OSG Korea Corporation (former Chairman of YU General Alumni Association) took the position of 40th and 41st Chairman of General Alumni Association for four years (from March 2018 to February 2022). Chairman JEONG Tae-il received a plaque of merit for his contributions in development of alumni association.

Development of an AI model for possible analysis of students’ concentration and understanding levels in online lectures for the students of faculty and graduate school of Department of Education Proposal of AI utilization method was praised in descriptive evaluation. Received gold award and excellence award in “AI leaning data hackathon” [February 15, 2022] <From the left, JOO Jeong-hun (Department of Education) and PARK Kang-yoon and KIM Kil-jae (master course of graduate school)> “What role will AI be able to play in smart education environment?” “AI utilization method” in the area of teaching/learning method proposed by YU students (President CHOI Oe-chool) attracts attention. PARK Kang-yoon (3rd grade of master course, Department of Education, graduate school), JOO Jeong-hun (3rd grade of Department of Education), and KIM Kyu-ri (3rd grade of Department of Visual Design) developed an AI model to identify understanding and concentration levels of students in online lectures. They developed an AI eye-tracing model based on eyeball data and developed indexes of fixation point data collecting, understanding, and concentrating levels. JOO Jeong-hun said, “The developed model may help teachers to identify concentration and understanding levels of students in the lessons using online lectures. It may be used as a solution for learning deficiency issues that occur in online education.” Recently, online education has become a topic due to prolonged expansion of COVID-19. With rapidly increased demand for intact online education, various types of learning deficiency occurs and it attracts attention as a supplementary measure for students who are demanders of education. The idea received gold award in “2021 Eyeball movement video AI learning data hackathon” held by Ministry of Information & Communication and National Information Society Agency. Also, PARK Kang-yoon and KIM Kil-jae (1st grade of master curse of graduate school) accessed to AI utilization method in the viewpoint of education evaluation. They took attention in recent situation that expansion of descriptive and essay-type evaluation systems have become an issue, developed AI similar with the level of human graders, and proposed an AI model to reduce burden of work of teachers in case of descriptive evaluation. KIM Kil-jae said, “It is inefficient to evaluate the essays of all students through human due to consumption of huge costs and time. The constructed AI evaluation model will help teachers to enhance efficiency of education.” The AI model constructed by them received excellence award in “essay data AI lessening data hackathon” held last year. PARK Kang-yoon who was included in the winner lists of two contests due to creative ideas commented, “I think that diverse challenges to use AI will make a foundation for construction of smart education environment and virtuous cycle of data in future. I am conducting in-depth researches on the method to enhance quality of education using diverse deep learning and machine running algorithms.”

Support with 70,000 Euro by international automobile illumination expert group under UN - International acceptance of research power Research on evaluation of safety of automobile direction projection lamps Will head international research on vehicle illumination performance evaluation and provide empirical basis for establishment of international legislation [February 18, 2022] Professor LEE Chan-soo of Department of Electronic Engineering of YU will conduct an international research with the support by GTB (Groupe de Travail Bruxelles, The International Automotive Lighting and Light Signalling Expert Group) which is international automobile illumination expert group under UN Especially, Professor LEE Chan-soo attracted more attention because his world-level research power was accepted with a GTB research project for the first time in Asia. In past, GTB research services were mostly conducted by colleges or institutions in Europe or North America. The professor’s research team will conduct a research on “Signal light projections with direction indicator.” The research project will be conducted by July this year with 70,000 Euro (about KRW 95 million) of research budget. Professor Lee described his research plan, “As floor guide lamps linked with automobile direction indicators provide additional information on direction in various dynamic environments where automobiles are operated, it will be verified whether such guide lamps distributed on the floors of various automobiles will help the traffic weak such as walkers and bicycle riders or cause issues.” The research team plans to construct virtual environment such as crossroads and T-shape intersections and to conduct virtual environment tests using HMD (Head Mounted Display), to perform detailed verification through road running simulators of Korea Expressway Corporation, and to perform verification based on actual vehicles in K-city (a self-driving test city) of Korea Automobile Testing&Research Institute (KATRI) of Korea Transportation Safety Authority. Professor Lee expected, “The result of this research will provide empirical basis for Automobile sub-committee under the European Economic Commission of the United Nations (UNECE/WP29) to establish legislation on projection base lamps such as turn signal guide lamps. It will be the base for development of communication lamps and scenarios related with not only lamp performance evaluation but also self-driving vehicles in future.” The GTB research project is the result of international acceptance of government-supported projects and industry-academy cooperative researches conducted by him until now. Professor Lee operated Automobile illumination fusion expert cultivation team with the support by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2015 to 2020 and is leading a world level research team specified in automobile illumination. The research team has conducted basic and applied researches on automobile illumination to enhance visibility and safety of drivers in bad weather environment and on night roads using weather environment test beds. He attracts attention with presentation of research results in famous international academic meetings and GTB expert meetings including International Symposium on Automotive Lighting (ISAL) and International Congress: SIA VISION, etc. Also, he is continuously conducting industry-academy cooperative researches including evaluation of safety of guide lamps and evaluation of visibility in climate/environment with professional automobile component enterprises including SL Corporation.

Establishment of Wolsan Scholarship with accumulated 4 million USD donated with “A heart to repay the kindness of parents” Active U.S.A Inc. standing in LA clothing and fashion industry as a Korean immigration success story Led established YU American Federation Alumni Association as the former first chairman [January 12, 2022] “I will send 2 million USD as soon as I return to the USA. Parents of our times lived dedicated life for their children for their whole life. I’d like to support juniors’ learning with a heart to repay the kindness of parents. YU should lead cultivation of talents based on good characters!” YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) received a large gift from a US alumnus on the 75th anniversary at beginning of 2022. Chairman LEE Don of Active U.S.A. Inc., a large clothing company in LA, expressed to donate 2 million USD. Chairman LEE called on YU President CHOI Oe-chool on his way to return to the USA after visiting his mother in Korea during the year-end and new year holidays. He was returning with a heavy heart after a short pleasure to see his 96-year mother. Especially, he had to follow his tight schedule to return to the USA on the next day of completion of self-quarantine after entry into Korea due to COVID-19. Chairman LEE donated 1 million USD to YU, his alma mater, in 2012 and Wolsan Scholarship is being operated. Scholarship fund donated by him reaches 4 million USD including 1 million USD additionally donated in 2018. Wolsan Scholarship is the largest one in the private scholarship being operated by YU. Wolsan Scholarship was established with the nom de plume (Wolsan) of his deceased[late] father (LEE Dong-ho) under joint names with his mother, LEE Hong-sik Wolsan LEE Dong-ho (1923-2011) is the 15th generation of LEE Eon-jeok (1491-1553), one of Five Oriental Sages in Joseon Dynasty, and has Chairman LEE (eldest son), LEE Seung-yeon, LEE Jeong-hyeon, and LEE Hyeong (Professor of Department of Neurology and Management Strategy Manager, Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center). LEE Dong-ho was the owner of Daeseongheon, Gyeongsangbukdo Tangible Cultural Property No. 34 in Yangdongmaeul registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Chairman LEE has been leading cultural heritage preservation including restoration of a 300-year old house through historical investigation with Gyeongsangbukdo since his father’s decease. Chairman LEE donated 1 million USD of scholarship fund to YU, his alma mater, in 2012 to repay the kindness of his father and mother died in 2011 and has been supporting juniors with establishment of Wolsan Scholarship. The scholarship students work in various areas of society as lawyers, architectures, and teachers, etc. after graduation. Chairman LEE has been continuing donations for University Development Fund and General Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, etc. as well as Wolsan Scholarship and made large contributions in development of the university and alumni association. Chairman LEE is a successful US businessman and leads strengthening of global capability of the youth in Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas as well as YU juniors as a foreign adviser of Gyeongsangbukdo. He invited more than 100 college students as intern workers of Active U.S.A. and made sufficient support to enhance practical capability. Chairman LEE has student ID 73 of Department of Architectural Engineering, YU, went to the USA in 1986, established Active U.S.A. Inc. in the next year, and continued success. He experienced a hardship to lose his whole property due to LA riots occurred in 1992 but is a positional person who succeeded in comeback based on his credibility and excellent leadership accumulated as a businessman. He works as a director of Pacific City Bank (a USA Korean-person bank), leading CEO of World Korean Business Convention, director of Hoejae LEE Eon-jeok Commemorative Business Association, foreign adviser of Gyeongsangbukdo, and chairman of Daegu & Gyeongbuk Fraternity Scholarship in Southern California. He continued donation activities in spite of residing in the USA and was selected as the 3rd foreign Honor Society of Community Chest of Korea for “Fruit of Love.” Chairman LEE has been leading development of his alma mater and alumni as well as donation of scholarship. Chairman LEE led establishment of American Federation Alumni Association for the first time in the universities in the south of the Hangang River which is one of foreign base alumni associations of YU. At that time, Chairman LEE took charge of preparatory chairperson and persuaded alumni and encouraged their participation in visiting major cities in the USA. Chairman LEE served in the post of the first Chairman of American Federation Alumni Association after Chairman of YU LA Alumni Association. in the meaningful year of 75th anniversary. I respect the sharing life of Chairman LEE who passed the love received from his parents to juniors as a whole. Juniors will also feel the heart of grace felt by Chairman LEE from his parents. This year of 75th anniversary will be a new starting point to cultivate talents to make contributions in human society. Machinery IT College held The 5th YU Robocup and CS team of Department of Robot Machinery Engineering won. Direct manufacture and operation of balancing robots by fusing machinery, electronics, electricity, SW, and wireless communication technologies, etc. “Enhancement of creativity and problem solving capability by fusing various major knowledge and technology” [January 26, 2022] YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) held The 5th YU Robocup, a robot soccer competition. The competition was prepared to enhance technical understanding of robots which is one of core areas in the 4th industrial revolution times and to strengthen convergence capability and enhance problem solving capability. The competition was held in the lobby of YU Robot Hall at 1:00 pm on January 26 by Department of Robot Machinery Engineering of YU Machinery IT College and 14 teams consisting of 28 students of faculties (departments) implementing College Innovation Support Project of the Ministry of Education. YU RoboCup is a soccer competition to uses balancing robots. Width, height, weight, motor power, and wheel size of robots were designated according to established rules and students manufactured robots with free selection of materials and shapes of robot frames, internal controllers, communication equipment, batteries, controllers, etc. Students participated in the competition with direct manufacture of robots in which machinery, electronics, electricity, SW, and wireless communication technologies, etc. The competition was conducted in the playground in tournament method by the method that each team consisting of two students control their manufactured balancing robots using controllers Dean PARK Yong-wan of YU Machinery IT College managed the competition and said, “Robot engineering, in which various majors such as machinery, electronics, and ICT, etc. are fused, is highlighted as a core area of the 4th industrial revolution times. Students may enhance their understanding level of technologies and problem solving capability by direct manufacture and operation of robots based on their major knowledge. I will develop and implement various extra-curriculum programs as well as educational courses so that YU students may become creative fusion talents to lead future industries.” Meanwhile, CS team consisting of CHOI Yeon-jae and SHIN Seung-heon (2nd grade of Department of Robot Machinery Engineering won the competition
