ALTHOUGH YEUNGNAM UNIVERSITY MUSEUM does not collect many Buddhist works of art, the museum boasts of several, which are considered to be national treasures. The Avatamska Sutra, a sacred Buddhist book, written in gold on the navy blue paper, contains a beautiful scene that represents Goryeo paintings of which only a few remain at the present time. The Wooden Seated Tathagata Statue collected by the museum contains a document in its body. According to the document recovered, this Tathagata statue was erected at Myeongjeok Temple on Biseul Mountain in A.D. 1637. This statue has become a standard for the study of Buddha statues made in the Joseon era. The execution of facial expression and the shape of the hands on the statue make it a very attractive masterpiece.

GORYEO CELADON, with its inlaid design, is representative of aristocratic Korean arts and crafts. The university museum owns various Celadon vessels such as bottles, pitchers, and bowls that demonstrate the essential beauty of Celadon. There are excellent masterpieces of Celadon in underglazed iron, as well.

Originating from the Celadon is the Buncheongware porcelain produced during the eary Joseon era. Buncheongware expresses the art of the common people. Characteristic of the Buncheongware is a simple form with various designs reflecting popular, rather than classic, taste. The museum's collection includes many excellent masterpieces.

ALSO FROM THE JOSEON ERA, is the elegant White Porcelain. This fine china reflects the spirit of Korea's humble nationality with its purity in color, simple form, and design. The museum's collection of White Porcelain can be traced from early to late Joseon. Various types of White Porcelains are displayed. Especially enjoyable is the Blue on White Porcelain Brush Holder Decorated with an Orchid Design, donated by Suam, which is a well-known masterpiece. The museum also owns many excellent White Porcelain Water Droppers
